Jennifer's Blog Tip:
PPC Blogs:
My friend Dave has a really good one over at cpa affilaites. I think its a must read for anyone doing PPC.
Pepperjamsearch has a pretty good blog going. They post quite a bit off that topic (ppc) but the PPC specific posts are really good. I do not think there is another SEM company that discloses such transparency.
Also I highly recommend you check out BumpZee. Most well respected affiliates roll there.
Which is better forums or blogs for info?
Well here is my opinion as alluded to earlier. Blogs are good but a lot of times people can be wishywashy because of there relationship with companies. I personally like companies that tell the good and the bad. Pepperjams blog for instance points out stuff like Yahoo Search Marketing giving them a refund of 10,000$ for invalid clicks or how AdBrite sends them shitty traffic. Now if I would have saw this on a forum I would have probably not even given it a second look but since its on the company blog of the worlds largest Search Engine Marketing agency and recently named to the INC 500 Top Fastest Growing Companies… its not like they are going to lie.

Robert's Blog Tip
Hi Robert,
I apologize for replying so late...was kinda busy with school work. Anyway, if you ask me for tips or advice, I can go on forever and probably might not be right at times. Instead let me point you to this article ( http://www.sponsoredreviews.com/blog/?p=21) that has an exhaustive list of resources that will get you started on blogging. There is no right or wrong and depends mostly on your aim or goals of blogging and also on the nature/content of your blog.
Hope this helps. Let me know.

Hey Joe , thank you for your intrest in my blog.
The main thing about blogging is that if you write
well and have intresting things to stay, more and
more people will follow your blog. Start small and
eventually it will grow. Also write about something
that you care about, because if you dont people will
notice it is flat. All the best.

Hey Rich,
Quickly, my thoughts are...
Wordpress
Feedburner
Statcounter
Don't worry about all the fancy bells and whistles, the most important thing is the writing
Link to and comment on other blogs--that's how you grow
Figure out what you want out of blogging: a big audience? To express yourself? That will help determine your strategy
Hope it helps! Let me know if you have more questions. As a point of reference, my blog looked like a piece of crap until recently, and only this week got archives (after 2 years). I still think the content is the most important part by far.
Thanks,
-Ramit
Btw, Rich, let me know if you might be interested in having me speak to your class. I'll be in NYC next Friday (the 16th)...

Darren Herman - http://www.darrenherman.com
Hi Rich,
Say hi to Professor O'Donnell for me! He's a friend of mine and colleague of nextNY!
How did you come across my blog? Would love to hear!
As for blogging...hmmm, lets see.
a) I started on Typepad.com and found it fine. I moved over to my own domain/hosted solution (moveable type backend) as I wanted to own all of my postings and tweak the software a bit. I'm not extremely technical when it comes to blogs so I do not know all the differences between each system, but so far, it's been great.
What do you want to blog about? My issue with blogging is that sometimes I have tons to talk about, other times, nothing. I want to keep my readers always interested so I need to come up with interesting commentary. It can feel like a chore sometimes so make sure you keep it fun!
A recommendation I would make to you is to pick a topic and stick to it. Dont blog about everything under the sun as readers want to read 1 particular subject.
Hope this helps!

James Picerno - http://www.capitalspectator.com
Rich,
Thanks for reading, and best of luck in the world of blogs.
I can't really say what's the "best" way to go about blogging, since
"best" differs quite a lot depending on the person and the blog. That
said, I can tell you that I started with Blogger (now a Google division),
and my experience was quite good. It's a great way to get your feet wet at
no charge. I eventually set up my own site by of 2MHost, although there
are many other services available. I'm currently using Movable Type,
although I'm told that WordPress is just as good if not better.
Beyond the tech side, the great insight is that blogging, if it's to have
any value and quality, takes time. It helps that I'm a journalist in my
day job, so for me, blogging is really an extension of my career. Of
course, any one can write. The bottom line: the more you blog, the better
you get. Simple as that, really.
I'd suggest starting small and low key. Once you've got your footing, you
may want to start telling the wider world.
Here's one caveat that is essential: be careful what you write, as it can
come back to haunt you. Anything you post on a blog, or send as an email,
has the potential to remain in the public record forever. Writing the
wrong thing could, theoretically, destroy your career 10 years from now.
Generally, if you're writing about public issues (the economy, movies,
etc.), you're on safe ground. As for people, stick with public officials.
Not sure if that helps, but it's a few thoughts off the top of my head.
Best,

Rich --
Thanks for the note.
Long answers, and limited time, so let me just say it's pretty
idiosyncratic stuff. You have to find an area that interests you
oodles, where posting doesn't feel like work, or an obligation. It has
to feel like something you would do anyway, and that this is just a
nice outlet.
I use MT software, hosted at Cornerhost, and run a bunch of stats
apps, to which I may minimal attention. I run ads from Google, FM, and
some one-offs.
Wrt mistakes. Can't point to many, other than pulling punches now and
then. You have to be authentic, and you have to have a take on things.
More echoes in the online echo-chamber the world does not need.
Cheers.

Michelle Leder - http://www.footnoted.org
Hi Rich-
Sorry for the delayed response. Lots of email and too little time to
answer it. I can't say I know the best way and there's clearly people
who are much more technologically savvy than me, but I use WordPress.
I find that it's easy to post and publish, especially so with the
latest upgrade that they released a few weeks ago. For the first year
or so, I used blogger, which is very easy for a beginner to use, but
which didn't have a way to categorize blog posts -- something both me
and my readers find very useful. The other popular blogging platform
is typepad, though I know very little about them.
My suggestion is to check out blogs that you like and see what you
like and don't like. I've gotten some of my best ideas looking at
other blogs, particularly those in my space. And I've found most
bloggers are willing to answer questions about what works and what
doesn't.
Of course, the hard part isn't starting a blog: it's getting people
to read it. That's not as easy as it seems and although there are a
few exceptions, usually comes with time.
Hope that helps. BTW -- if you're ever interested in interning with
footnoted, let me know. I'm always looking for good interns,
especially those who are familiar with the site.
Regards,
Michelle

Sally Falkow's business blog
Hi Liz,
Let me start off by saying that I am excited you took an interest to my blog! It is one of a few blogs relating to women in business. Since you are a student, I will give you the basics on creating and writing business blogs.
Business Blogging 101
Need some help getting started with business blogging?
To get an idea, you just have to read four pages with basic facts.
What's a blog
To understand blogging as a corporate communications tool, we must understand the nature of blogs.
Why blog?
From a business perspective there are several potential reasons to blog. But, as always, it depends on what you want.
Read blogs?
There are basically three ways to read a blog: Visit the web page, use an online news aggregator or download a reader.
Publish blogs?
You don't have to buy anything to start blogging. You don't need to know coding.
Finally, when writing blogs, make it as authentic as possible. Good luck!

Anthony Fontanello to Sam Decker
Anthony,
Thank you for your interest and as in advice, well the best blogging advice I could give you is to learn how to use blogs and RSS for marketing.
These are the best tools you can use for promoting your own blog and generate high traffic among readers.
Also it is best just to get started and learn from mistakes in that matter. But make sure that what you post (as in facts) is credible to the author.
Hope this will help you.
Best,
Sam Decker

Paulina Mardjonovic's Blog Tips
From JLP at AllFinancialMatters.com
Paulina,
Thanks for the email. I’ve never been the subject of a homework assignment before. COOL!
Have you started your blog yet?
As far as tips go, here’s a few I can think of:
Pick a topic and concentrate on it.
Decide on which platform you are going to use (Blogger.com is free but you have less “freedom”)
Make friends with other bloggers by linking to posts they have written and by offering good, constructive comments. Whatever you do, just make sure you’re not spamming other blogs.
Utilize tools like Feedburner and Technorati, which will help build traffic and readership.
Set up a Bloglines account to track the blogs you follow.
Ask good questions to get your readers involved.
Monetize your blog with Google Adsense and other advertising programs.
Have patience as it takes a while to grow a blog.
HAVE FUN!
I’m sure there’s more, but right now I can’t think of them.
Let me know if you need anything else.

Marion - response from http://www.tonyaplank.com/tonyaplank/swan_lake_samba_girl/
Hi Marion,
Thank you so much for your kind words! It makes me so happy to know that people enjoy reading my blog!
I don't know if I have any good advice to give since I'm still so new at this! But I guess I would say, write about what you are most passionate about, and, for diary blogs anyway, write about it in your own words. If you write what you think people want to read instead of what your true passion is, or if you try to sound "writerly" or like a reporter, I think that destroys the flow and it's not as engaging and interesting for people to read. And be who you are -- those are the best kinds of diary blogs I think, where you feel like you kind of get to know the blogger!
As far as don'ts -- the only thing I can think of is that I'm not sure I'd go with WordPress as a blogging so software if you're not super internet-savvy (I'm sure not!). My blog is connected to a website and I had no idea about the different kinds of blogging software and my web builder said he thought WordPress was the best since it had so many features, etc. I think it's probably best for someone who is a complete technie, but I find it not very user friendly for people who don't know anything about how things work on the internet. I am still trying to figure out how to embed YouTube videos... If you are internet savvy though, then it is probably a good software that will enable you to do a lot of things.
Also, have you read The Winger? I love that blog! Hers is a website with a blog attached, but is a lot more fancy than mine. And she's got all kinds of fun things, like the attached message board and several different pages.
I hope this is of some help. Sorry I can't be of more help -- I just started blogging so it is all new to me to, and I'm just kind of figuring things out as I go along! Good luck, and let me know how it goes! And, again, thanks so much for letting me know that you like my blog -- it's is really nice and encouraging to hear such things!
